THE SANKOFA PROJECT

Reclaiming Our Culture

The primary goal of The Sankofa Project is to formally initiate youth into discovering and understanding the importance of who they are, why they are here and the purpose and meaning for their existence. Secondly, this discovery and understanding must be connected to positive life sustaining and community building attitudes and behaviors expected of a youth as they transition from one stage of development to the next.
The Sankofa Project operates on the premise that "Kinship Love" is the motivating force of the universe. Simply said, Kinship Love speaks to Belonging, i.e. having a sense of connectedness (Kinship) with family and community and Concern for Others (Love), particularly for those with whom one feels connected.

Goals

The goals of Rites of Passage is accomplished by allowing youth to 1) learn how culture and values, influence and determine their thoughts, attitudes, behaviors and spirit; 2) to look at history in order to see how their current values help to maintain presents conditions; 3) to learn and use another value system (the Nguzo Nane) that will address the quality of their life, their family and community; 4) to use creative arts (visual, music, drama, dance, etc.) to have youth become closer to their inner spirit; and finally, 5) to explore how they relate to others in order to improve relationship skills.

In accomplishing these goals, the youth will be presented with a motto that will reinforce what they should complete the Rites of Passage knowing and believing …… “I exist because others have made it possible for me to exist and since others have made it possible for me, I must also make it possible for others.”
